St Andrews News
As a result of the rainy weather, many gardens are not as advanced this year as would normally be the case. Consequently, a number of the keener gardeners among us have expressed a reluctance to open their gardens at the beginning of July. As a result, the committee have decided they have no alternative other than to cancel the GARDEN OPEN DAY. In the hope that conditions next year will be better, the event is postponed until early July 2002. More news in January next year.
ADDITIONAL EVENT
Many of us remember the excellent concert given by the harpist Slip End resident MARGARET KNIGHT a year or two ago. Margaret has kindly agreed to perform for us again on SUNDAY 15th JULY.
Give Lavishly! Live Abundantly!
The more you give, the more you get -
The more you laugh, the less you fret -
The more you do unselfishly,
The more you live abundantly .
The more of everything you share,
The more you'll always have to spare -
The more you love, the more you'll find
That life is good and friends are kind .
For only what we give away,
Enriches us from day to day.
'Vicars'
If you are unhappy with your vicar, simply have your churchwardens send a copy of this letter to six other churches who are also tired of their vicar.
Then bundle up your vicar and send him to the church at the top of the list in the letter.
Within a week you will receive 16,435 vicars and one of them should be alright!
Have faith in this chain letter for vicars. Do not break the chain. One church did -and got their own vicar back!
(from a Salisbury Theological College leaflet)
Please note:-
We are not unhappy with ours but he is off to Pastures New in the not too distant future
WOMENS INSTITUTE
As usual May is the month for our Annual Meeting. We welcomed Mrs Chris Brewin, Madame President of Downside W.I. Her job for the evening was to count the votes for the lady who will preside for the next twelve months. Sheila Coleman was returned, as Madame President so was Sallie Stonestreet, Hon.Sec. and Angela Gawlett, Treasurer. Thank you very much from all the members - you did a grand job last year ladies, we look forward in anticipation.
We had two resolutions countrywide for the I.G.M. at Cardiff. They were both very involved so we left the final decision and our note to our representative when more discussion had taken place.
The outing to Walthamstow proved very enjoyable. "Going to the Dogs" can't be as bad as I was always bought up to believe.
Other outings in the pipeline:-
Group Walk at Studham - 14th June
Belvoir Castle - 30th June
Forthcoming meetings:-
June 19th - Hedgehog rescue
Speaker Jeanette Evans
Competition - Longest weed.
We meet 3rd Tuesday of the month 7.30 - 10 p.m. at Collingswell V.C. Memorial Hall
How about an evening out among friends?
See you there - Patricia Crick
SLIP END TENNIS CLUB
I believe someone has forecast a long hot summer. If that is correct (or even if it isn't)
you are invited to spend some of that time on the courts at Slip End Playing Field. We are happy to welcome all levels of players from those who have never played before to those who did play a long time ago to those who really would like to play better. We are again running coaching sessions for both juniors and adults and continuing a Ladies Morning, which started last year. If you would like any more information about these then give Sally a ring on 413501.
The Club makes no profit but has to cover the costs of repairs, upkeep and affiliation to the LTA. We are currently looking towards re-surfacing the courts in the near future. Unlike other Tennis Clubs, our fees reflect our community-use philosophy. The annual fees are £12 for a Junior, £24 for a Senior but £36 for a Family (which covers everyone) with discounts for early renewal. We also sell new tennis balls for £1 each (typical shop price is £7 for 4) and match balls (used once) for 50p each. Members also get a 10% discount at total racquet sports in Dunstable.
As well as playing tennis our members like to watch the professionals. Last year members visited the Albert Hall to watch the veterans, Wimbledon and the Davis Cup match held at Wimbledon. As we are affiliated to the LTA we get allocated Wimbledon tickets and are given a 50% discount on tickets to the Davis Cup.
If you would like to go to Wimbledon you can enter the ballot for tickets by writing to the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Your form needs to then be returned by November. Alternatively, if you are a member of Slip End Tennis Club you can enter our draw which takes place at the AGM in March/April. We have received four pairs of tickets for each of the last three years. It is a rule of the Club that the first pair of tickets must go to a member who has not received tickets through the Club before. This year two pairs of tickets were allocated to members who have not been to Wimbledon before.
For any further information on the Tennis Club phone Peter Smith on 733253.
SLIP END PLAYGROUP
Summer has hopefully now arrived and we will be playing outside in the village playground next to the village hall as often as possible. We play on the swings and climbing equipment and also take some of our own toys like the water and sand trays, the hoops and balls, buggies and dolls out with us.We are again joining with the After School Club to run some stalls at the Slip End Lower School Fayre which is on 30th June. We are hoping to raise some much-needed funds at this event and hope to see you all there. Playgroup will also be holding a sponsored Fun Run round the playground next to the hall in July to raise the money for our summer outing. The children will run once round the park and will be rewarded with and certificate and maybe even a lolly for their efforts. Of course parents will be welcome to cheer them on.
BROWNIES
The girls are now working on their Needlecraft Badge, with the help of Sandra Lee Dell (Knapton), making things to sell for the Craft Fayres.
On Wednesday July 11th we shall be taking you 'Around the World', a little performance we are doing in aid of the Keech Cottage Hospice and we hope that you will support us, more details next month.
Next Craft Fare - July 1st Sunday

ALLOTMENT & GARDEN ASSCIATION
Vegetable Garden
In the vegetable plot, vigilance is needed to keep pests at bay, with dustings of Derrie powder or one of the special insecticides put up for particular plants or root crops.
Earth up all March and April planted potatoes, best results are obtained by drawing the soil round the potato stems a little at a time, go over them about 3 times in all, leaving the bed in a series of broad flat topped ridges.
Throughout June you should not miss the opportunity of planting out all manner of winter greens, including Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale and a savoy. Peas sown last month must be staked in the same way as earlier batches. Plant out runner beans, in double lines 10 inches apart, allowing 8 inches from plant to plant in rows. If you planted potatoes in February, these can be lifted now, when you require them.
Flower & Fruit Garden
Remove runners from violets and strawberries, prune flowering shrubs. Start to thin apples and pears, spray apples against Codlin Moth. Disbud roses, stake and disbud carnations.
QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT
Who first discovered 'how to milk a cow' and what on earth did he think he was doing? .
Why is the word 'abbreviation' so long? ..
How do you tell when you've run out of invisible ink?
VILLAGE HALL
Well we have yet another month gone by and all in the village is much the
same and will be forever more in my opinion. Nothing exciting to report and
I am beginning to feel that it is a waste of time writing anything however
small for the slip enders to read. (meaning there is not always something special to write about)
The village hall meeting went off as usual with the same old thing no special
subject that hasn't been discussed over and over again. Bills will be paid and renovations as usual were talked about doing to the hall and thank god some action will now be taken. Is there a good decorator who is looking to do a good job if so get in touch and you can maybe give us a quote for complete decoration of the hall that must be in before the next meeting June 11th. We will have vacant dates that can be used to do this job from July 18th to
August 4th. I do hope that something comes about, as it really needs to be done. and may lift the spirit of the committee members.
There will now be an assault course installed in the play park area for the
youngsters (UP TO THE AGE OF 14 ) but lets hope that the 14 year olds will give plenty of space to the smaller age groups. By the time that this article gets into the magazine the equipment may be installed so look after it you guys out
there and you will have lots of fun for a long long time. I haven't noticed any ball games being played in the hall grounds lately so I am delighted that you lovely young people have respected my wishes and realized that it is easy to go down the road. I daresay some one will say that
there has been continuing football but I personally haven't seen you, so many
many thanks to you all.
There is nothing else to write about so, read next month for more news.
bye again from Muriel Allsop

CRAWLEY PLAYGROUND.
Good News. Hopefully, by the time this edition of the PN hits the streets work will have started on the new equipment for the playground. Last year Slip End PC obtained a grant from the Rural Management Services of SBDC for £2,000.00. for new equipment for the playground, to which the PC added another £2,000.00. Some of you will recall that a questionnaire was made available on the Internet and in the traditional manner for input for the new equipment. Sadly, the replies received were few and far between. The new equipment is targeted at 9 - 14 year old, and it will be a nice surprise. The majority of replies received indicated a wish for football goalposts or basketball rings. Unfortunately these could not be installed as the terms of the lease by which the PC lease the land from the Village Hall prohibits Ball Games such as football or basketball. Whilst it is understood that young people have played there ever since the playground was taken over by the PC, it was on an informal basis and, provided no damage occurred as a result, a blind eye was turned. Giving an official sanction to football was not something we could do.
The bad news is that the new equipment is going where the football is usually played, so all those budding footie stars of the future will, a bit like our England squad bereft of Wembley, have to look elsewhere to play the glorious game.
Which brings us onto the second matter. There maybe some confusion about playing ball games in the Village Hall Car Park. Here comes the history part. Back in the mid 1980's the Village Hall obtained a grant to resurface the car park. At the time the Crawley playground was closed - this was before the PC took over the lease. One of the terms and conditions of the grant was that, for a period of ten years young people would be allowed to play ball games - and that included football obviously - in the car park, but only under adult supervision. These conditions expired in the mid 1990's. Therefore, after consultation with the Village Hall Management Committee, who, I am sure, will also confirm this. PC have to state quite clearly that although an agreement for football playing was in existence some years ago. It is no longer so, in the future anyone found playing ball games in the Village Hall car park will be asked to leave, failure to do so by that person or persons could result in the Police being called - a decision such as that, of course, would be entirely up to the Village Hall Management Committee. There has been too much damage being done to the fences, lights etc., in both the playground and the car park.
The playing fields down near the Church are more than adequate for football, cricket etc., etc., especially for the teenagers.

ALEY GREEN METHODIST CHURCH
Our Beetle drive in April was very well supported and enjoyed by 19 adults and 19 children. £97.00 was raised for Methodist Homes for the Aged. The next Beetle drive will be on Friday 20th July at 6.30 at the Church - Tickets from Ann on 01582 733668.
Thank you to everyone who bought cakes and preserves from our stall outside the Co-op in Caddington in May - £197.72 was raised. This money paid for our Church floor to be sanded and re-stained and a carpet to be laid behind the communion rail.
It was with great joy that on May 13th Harry John Richardson was christened and Dawn Taylor and Rebecca Sowley were confirmed and made members of our Church.
