In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Operation Christmas ChildOPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
Just a last quick reminder for:
Shoe boxes should now be complete and, if you have not done so already they should be taken to St Andrews Church ready for the collection service. It has been a busy time, wrapping, buying gifts, collecting boxes etc. and I have been along to a Cubs evening and talked to the cubs (and their leaders) about Operation Christmas Child.. They were all very enthusiastic and one cub even wanted to put his basketball in! They had lots of good ideas and I'm sure the children who receive their 'love in a box' will be very pleased with them. Thank you to everyone who has contributed from the Village. Also thanks to the ladies of Markyate who have done very well - The Good Companions there and friends of Mrs Doris Green (my mum) have also been busy and sent over twenty boxes to be collected. Doesn't it make you feel good, when people are so kind.
A big round of applause to everyone who has helped with the campaign and remember to think of the children when they open their treasured boxes.

CADDINGTON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
The speaker for the evening,
Mr C Parry certainly knew his subject - "Royal Ladies of Bedfordshire",
and we were informed that Katherine of Aaragon's marriage to Henry VIII was annulled at the Priory in Dunstable. Unfortunately, the evening went by so quickly and dates just flew by that I didn't get a chance to record any! History was not my favourite subject at school but I'm sure if Mr Parry had been around in those days I'm sure he would have made it more interesting than just trying to remember a list of dates.
Talking of history, the Millenium Time capsule has now been sunk in the central aisle of All Saints Church and is to be raised in one hundred years time. The schools gave a very good account of themselves and the Bishop of Bedford made it a great occasion.
We were all sad to hear of the passing of Irene Windsor's husband Sid and offer our deepest sympathy. Remember that your friends are all around you Irene if you need us.
We meet at Collingswell Hall on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 7.30 - 10.00
Next meeting Nov 21st Sealed Knot
Xmas meeting Dec 19th Christmas.
See you there
Patricia Crick

THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Life is like a hot bath
The longer you stay in it,
the more wrinkled you get!

SECURITY WARNING RE PHONE CALLS

There is a scam going around at the moment targeting females in particular. Someone rings your number saying they are from the Post Office and asks you to confirm your company's postcode. When this is given they are told that they have become eligible for some gift vouchers and are then asked to provide their home address and postcode. So far, 90% of the women who have given this information have been consequently burgled as it is assumed that their homes are empty during office hours. The Post Office have confirmed that they are not conducting any Postcode surveys.
Likewise if you receive a phone call from someone who says they are an AT & T Service Technician and are conducting a test on the line. If they or anyone else asks you to touch nine, zero, then hash (90#) and then hang up, do not do it. It allows full access to your phone line and can be used for long distance phone calls and chat lines and then billed to your account.

DO NOT PRESS 90# FOR ANYONE.
DO NOT PRESS 90# FOR ANYONE.

POSTAL SERVICE - SLIP END
For several months now I have been experiencing problems with our postal service in the village and talking to other people mine is not an isolated case. Numerous people have been telling me that they too have repeatedly had mail for someone else put through their door and they have had to redeliver it. My own experience is that mail for 86 Summer Street is put through my door which is 86 Front Street! The same happens in reverse. Others have told me that this is happening regularly to them and in a couple of instances that bundles of assorted mail have been put through someone's door. Different people, pointing out his errors have challenged the postman responsible on numerous occasions and he could not care less and continues to do it. I know that as well as myself several other people
have telephoned Royal Mail to complain and nothing has happened, frankly I am appalled that the postman concerned continues in such a responsible position and nothing is done about this matter. I have now written a formal letter of complaint to Royal Mail at the following address and would ask anyone else experiencing problems to do the same:
Royal Mail Customer Services Centre
Colnebank House, 30 St Peters Street
COLCHESTER, CO1 1HY
This is a very serious matter and I intend to see that a proper postal service is resumed as soon as possible. Please write and complain if you are being affected (I am willing to type out letters for people if they don't have access to a computer/typewriter - telephone me on 423622).
Rosemary Wickens
86 Front Street

SLIP END CUBS
The Cubs have had a very busy and rewarding time since returning after the summer holidays. This year we did not manage a summer camp, as in past years, but we have booked a few weekend camps. The first being in October, this was a camp at Phasels Wood Scout campsite near Hemel Hempstead. The camp's theme was Astronomy and it truned out to be a very successful weekend. The boys behaviour and interest was fantastic. We managed to star gaze on Friday evening and get down to some real work on Saturday. We built solar systems and joined in with a camp fire with another Scout Group. On Sunday we were inspected by camp site staff, they were very pleased with all they saw and even felt that they had learnt from the Cubs. Liam Dawson was voted Cub of the weekend. I would like to say a heartfelt thank to my team - Baloo aka Merevyn Wilson, Raksha - Sue Day, Sandy Swindell our Group Scout Leader, Mike Hockey, and finally but very importantly Liz and Paddy Higgens for the wonderful food
they provided all weekend. Other things that we have been involved in are boxes for Operation Christmas Child and we attended Harvest Service at St. Andrews..
After October half term we will be getting down to some badge work which will take us up to Christmas. Watch out next month for the Cubs reports of camp.

CADDINGTON PRODUCE ASSOCIATION - ANNUAL SHOW
Luton News report that Valerie Church of Slip End almost cleared the board of cups and prizes at the above Annual Show this year! Admittedly the overall entry was below par, with some of the regular Caddington 'cup collectors' missing. However, Valerie was the only Slip End resident who entered, so why don't more of us 'have a go' next year? There are classes for flowers, vegetables, cakes and jams, photography and numerous handicrafts - also children's classes. Time was when Slip End had its own Show - maybe we will again! - but meanwhile shouldn't we give our friendly neighbors a run for their
Money?

PLAYING FIELD QUIZ NIGHT
Over seventy contestants formed themselves into ten teams to pit their wits against each other at this year's Playing Field Quiz Night. The evening had a new twist to keep everyone on their toes. As well as a prize awarded to the team with the highest score, a second prize was awarded to the team who finished highest on a giant Snakes and Ladders board using their scores from each round to progress up and down the board. The top score was shared between the Parish Councillors and friends and one of the Tennis Club teams who sportingly chose to share the prize. The only team to complete the Snakes and Ladders board was the St Andrews team through their skillful use of the ladders when other teams landed on the slippery snakes.
The £220 profit from the evening went to the upkeep of the Peter Edwards Hall which has proved to be a good asset to the village. If you would like to book the Hall for a function or party then give Tony a ring on 414127
