SOME WORDS OF WISDOM:-
Take time to be friendly -
it is the road to happiness.
Take time to dream -
It is hitching your wagon to a star.
Take time to love and be loved -
It is the privilege of the Gods.
Take time to look around -
It is too short a day to be selfish.
Take time to laugh -
It is the music of the soul.

Cans ThomometerCANS FOR BOOKS
Well, the summer holidays are behind us now and we have another school year to look forward to. The cans dropped into the bin outside the house throughout the summer and August was a good month with just over 1400 being collected.
As you can see from the gauge, we are well on the way to the next total and with your continuing support we should be able to cash these cans in just before we break for Christmas.
As usual, we want Aluminium cans and they can be sent in to Slip End Lower School Office or directly to me at 23 Claydown Way, Slip End.
Once again, thank you for your support.
Mervyn Wilson

VILLAGE HALL
Sadly, I have not a lot to report about this month's meeting at the village hall apart from the usual discussions of paying bills etc and perusing future bookings where upon, happily, we have quite a few bookings for the next few months.
The spacious car park will at last have the disabled bays marked to allow the extra room for wheelchair passengers. Next month's meeting is planned to be more informative so hopefully I can give you news of interest.
I logged on to the Slip End web site and I found a really interesting history about the hall. So if you young parishioners get the time to log on, you also may be interested as to how the village hall was founded and its many uses and I do believe that footballs were still kicked about in those days in the hall grounds. I noticed a few youths in the car park on the evening of our last meeting, Monday September 11th, however the camera eased my mind and enabled me to keep an eye on things so, frankly, the purchasing of that camera was a sensible idea and a pity that we waited so long before deciding on one. The lads were very tame and quiet but of course they did have one or two young ladies present .(it's surprising what a female can resolve.) We have numerous Xmas decorations for the hall and our next job will be to separate the old ones from the newer ones that were kindly donated to us from the Frog and Rhubarb. So a dusty job is in store for somebody (lets hope that they don't suffer from allergies). Recently, I noticed that the dog poop red bin near the vicarage is overloaded with whatever!! I wondered if there is a councillor in our midst who could shake up those in charge to have the contents removed. (You know now vicar where the bluebottles are coming from). Again, on the subject of a web site, as I do enjoy the computer and am finding out many things. I came across the war graves commission that brings up all military killed in World War one and two. I have printed out several names for friends which were moving and interesting, the name the place of the burial or memorial of the person killed is beautifully presented and I will gladly do print outs for anyone who knows of such a person as part of my hobby. After being given the name of any military I can find it quickly. I notice now as I drive past Flitton's garage how wonderfully it stands out as one passes by. The refurbishment is wonderful and a credit to all technicians and builders concerned. The building makes Slip End look a prosperous place that it deserves to be. I always said that Slip End was a dead end but buildings like this make things look a lot brighter and a great credit to the Flitton family. Especially when one thinks that the founders of the garage were one man and his wife, the sons must be proud of their own achievement. With all the hard work over the past years to introduce this lovely building, congratulations you lads you are a credit to Slip End. All we need now are a few more shops with different occupations to get back to normality. I will close until next time when I will write a few more notes. However some may possibly be disgruntled reading certain parts of this article but at least it fills a space. Bye for now
Muriel Allsop, Markyate Road.

SLIP END PLAYGROUP
Child PlayingThis term we are settling into our new times of 9.30 am to 12.30 pm with a slightly different format. For the first hour we play and the main craft of the day is on offer. A break at 10.30 is for 'circle time,' which includes singing or a story, some counting and a drink and snack to keep us going through the next play time, which includes going outside if the weather and grass are not too wet. Towards the end of this time the children can help themselves to another drink if they want one. Then at 12.00 a few of the children go home and the rest of us are soon packing away the toys ready to finish the morning with stories and rhymes. We have been busy cooking and cutting fruit and vegetables in September to tie in with the Harvest and made up a box of gifts for the Harvest Festival at St Andrews Church. Hamper for Harvest Festival
Now Autumn is our theme and we are learning the colours of Autumn and had a walk in Stockwood Park to collect 'conkers', acorns and fallen leaves to use at Playgroup and, of course, to have lots over to take home with us. Playgroup is going well this term but our numbers are currently quite low. Without extra fundraising our fees on their own will not cover our every day running expenses so our Nearly New Sale of children's toys, equipment and clothes on 14th October is particularly important to us. Please see our advert in this magazine for further details and give us your support if you can.

£'S FOR LBS
Ex bank employee and full time mum Paula has swapped those £'s for lbs. After the birth of her last child, Paula found those lbs. would not shift. So in September 1998, Paula joined Slimming World where she found the food optimising system and a new lease of life. Members are encouraged to eat unlimited amounts of meat, fish and chicken on the original plan and unlimited amounts of pasta and potatoes on the green plan.
By March 1999 Paula had lost 281b and has never been hungry as there is so much 'free food' to choose from. Paula who celebrates her 40th birthday in October has decided on a new career. From the 19th of September she will be taking the Tuesday night class at the Conservative Club, Vaughan Road, Harpenden, at 6:30pm. "Its so nice to be able to go into trendy shops and buy fashion clothes instead of slopping around in baggy clothes to hide the bulges. I still love cakes, sweets and biscuits and even a glass of wine". .All are allowed on the plan. Paula aims to provide good support and with the help of class members, plus her own knowledge, really encourage members to loose those pounds and to find a new confidence in themselves. For a chance to change your life please ring Paula on 01582 738205

GARDEN ASSOCIATION FOR OCTOBER
There are a few plots still vacant so if you are interested please phone Derrick on 736892. Plots are 10 pole per year.
Vegetable Garden
Do some digging and manuring in the vegetable plots. Turn over any soil already dug up. Couch grass should be burned and potato haulms may also by dry enough for the bonfire. Any 'decayed' matter left about is likely to breed disease and harbour pests. The white hearts (curds) of cauliflower's are liable to be damaged by frost, so remember to check on them occasionally and fold any outer leaves over any hearts that are forming to give them protection.
Fruit and flowers
Those shrubs that are deciduous can be planted or moved to other quarters. New roses can be planted - remember to make the ground very firm. Herbaceous perennials can be divided and replanted now. Gather remaining apples and pears.
Turf and repair lawns.
Gather all fallen leaves and burn.

SLIP END LOWER SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
This annual event took place on Saturday 16th September 2000 and despite the fuel crisis and cool but dry weather, 11 local lower school teams turned up and took part. Apart from the football matches there was a Raffle, Tea and Coffee and a very welcome hot burger from the barbecue. The Minnighan Cup was won by the team from Studham who beat Watling 5-0, while Lark Rise took the top prize of the Chevron plate, beating Willowfield 2-0.Slip End Lower School Football Team
The team from Slip End (shown here) was as follows:-
(back row L-R) Ian Jenkins, Sam Cook, Jay Jay Martin, Kirsten Brown (front row L-R) Tom Oliver, Robert Franklin, Marcus Chambers, Ian Wilson.

Mr. Bob Day, Slip End manager and the organiser of the tournament thanks all who came; the teams for their fair play and sportsmanship. Mr Paul Collinson and Mr Johnny Barker for refereeing the matches and all those other people who helped set up, run the event and clear up afterwards. In particular, Bob thanked his wife Sue for doing all the background work and organisation.

THE SLIP END WEBSITE
Slip End can now boast of a website that has very many features and is well updated. Over the past few years the Internet has really began to become an important tool to more and more people. The past few months have seen a large explosion in the numbers of people who can now get "online". The beauty of a website is that it can easily link very many topics and areas of interest into a single entity, and be instantly updated.
The Slip End website takes the village as its centrepiece and displays a large volume of information about Slip End and the surrounding area. One of the essential ideas in producing this site was to be sure that it was quick to load, easy to navigate and logically laid out. Some sites will take a long time to display on your screen because they rely very heavily on graphics - or picture files, that are rather large and take a long time to assemble. We have minimized the number of graphic files, whilst attempting to make the site interesting visually as well as content wise.
You can find all sorts to interest you on our site, from Local weather to Bus timetables, from how the Cricket Club are doing to what's on during the week or at the local cinema. Links to many useful websites are also included, such as Train Timetables, Local "what's-on" type sites and telephone directories. Nearly all the Slip End Associations and Clubs are represented on the site, and there is a section devoted to the History of Slip End. We also include a section highlighting local businesses, so you may find someone close at hand who will be able to provide you with a service. At the present point in time we are looking for someone who would like to help us with the administration of the business section of the website. If you are interested in getting involved, then please contact David Bolster on 424363.
Our most recent addition to the site is the Discussion Forum and Classified Adverts section. Both these features work on the principle that you can instantly leave a message or advert on the notice board. If you go to the discussion section you will find that you can start your own topic of conversation, so if you have a point of view about aircraft noise, or what they are going to do at junction 10, or the price of fish then here is where you can put your point of view across. Also you can add to a conversation that has already been started, so if someone has got your hackles up, then you can let them know what you think. Why not visit the site at www.slipend.co.uk and really get to know the village you live in. Any thoughts, suggestions, information or articles are always very welcome and much appreciated.
Peter King. (Webmaster)
