REPORT FROM DAVID & MARIAN
Friends of the Kingstons who do not have access to the web-site will no doubt be pleased to hear that they have now settled down happily into their new life in Dubai. Their house seems quite spacious with air-conditioning and is one of 24 villas that are built around a central pool. They have a small garden and have inherited a lodger called Sing who is looking after them well. The poor things have to put up with getting accustomed to the heat ( don't we all feel sorry for them!) and one of the down-side of living there is that David has to do a 200 mile round trip just to get to an off-license!
Until they get their residency status they will find it a bit difficult to buy even a can of beer from the supermarket - something we all take for granted over here!
Oh well - only just over 700 days to go!!

HEART FOUNDATION -
Report from the Web-site
Recently, on a hot day in June, four intrepid riders from Slip End took part in the London to Brighton bike ride. They were 80 year old Ted Soar, 75 year old Archie Johnson, Mrs Mc Farland and her daughter Gillian. The group were sponsored by Mc Farland Homes. Apart from the heat, which was enough to melt the tar on some of the roads, the four riders had a very enjoyable and problem free journey. Many of the side roads had been sealed off from the route allowing the 30,000 riders a free passage through. Along the route were Trestle tables that had been set up outside peoples gates to provide much needed water stops along the way. The route took them through Turners Hill, which has a village green on a slop. This was the major stop for the ride where the cyclists had an hours break to refresh and have their lunch. At this stop the Salvation Army Brass Band were playing, and drinks were served. After this point in the ride, the cyclists had broken the back of the ride, with just one big obstacle left to overcome. From there into Brighton is a six mile ride - all down hill, but the climb up was also a long one!.
bikeTed would like to thank everyone who sponsored him on this bike ride, especially the congregation of St Andrew's Church, who raised the bulk of the estimated £200 that Teds sponsors brought in. Also Ted would like to thank Eileen Crapnell for collecting the money for him. As Ted say's "she did the real work, I just did the ride!". Archie Johnson raised well over £100 that will go towards the estimated £2 Million pounds raised for The British Heart Foundation by the thousands of bike riders. This money will go to help the British Heart Foundation fight heart and circulatory disease. The BHF funds a wide range of initiatives including nursing care for heart patients, rehabilitation programs, support groups and emergency life-saving programs. They also provide life-saving cardiac equipment for use in hospitals and local communities.
Ted and Archie can be seen riding around the countryside 2 - 3 times a week. Recently they also took part in the Rotary Clubs of St Albans Charity Cycle Ride, which took place in May, running from Hitchin to Colney Heath. Money from that ride went to Abbeyfield St Albans Society, Emmaus Self Support Centres for the Homeless, Keech Cottage hospice for Children, Macmillan Nurses, St Albans Shopmobility, and Rotary Charities.

OUR VILLAGE HALL
music and danceWinter nights will soon be upon us (and if the weather we have seen lately is anything to go by it wont be long) and that's the time that the fun begins in the Village Hall. It will soon be 'DANCE TIME' so why not give it a try and come along and support your village in our newly extended Hall!
There is always dancing to a live band and what's more you wont be paying out for expensive drinks as you can bring your own! Once you've paid for your ticket - a real bargain at only £5.00 (and that includes your Buffet Supper) you can choose what drinks you bring. Maybe a nice bottle of wine to share, a few cans of beer or the odd bottle of champagne will help dance the night away! If you think you might be interested, do come along and you will be sure to get a warm welcome and a most enjoyable evening.

party foodDetails of the next few dances are on the back page in the Diary so make a note now

CHARITY
In reply to Stan Coker - August issue:
Let me begin by agreeing with Stan that "Charity begins at home". As I review my own charitable giving, I realise that the vast majority of it has been for "home" and very little, in comparison for "Asia". We should begin our charitable giving with those who have needs around us, but not end there. Although the UK is more generous than many countries - it was sad to see that at the Japan G8 summit, so many of the richest nations were unwilling to release the poor nations from debt. I am also saddened that there are also so many people in our own country that are so mean in their giving. I hasten to add that I know Stan, and that is not true of him. Stan gives much of his time supporting work among the Alcoholics and Homeless. Many people who give - only give money. The best gifts are love.
Stan is critical of the money that we have taken out to the Burmese refugees in Asia, but although we raised and took out £4500, the most important gift we took was not the money but our friendship - and that the refugees were not forgotten!
Charity began with the Bible and the directive to "care for the orphan and widow", enshrined in the law "to love your neighbour as yourself". It is well understood how Jesus radically re-defined that law. When asked "Who is my neighbour?", he replied with the "Parable of the Good Samaritan". To understand its impact it would be like telling a story about a good Serbian who helped a Kosovan! One of the reasons why people rejected Jesus was because he often took his charity out of "home", to other nationalities and people who were despised by others. giving Reviewing my own charitable giving against Jesus' priorities I reckon he might easily suggest that I still give too much charity to "home" and not enough abroad.
Thank you Stan, for making me think about it. Rev. David Bolster

AUGUST WI MEETING
We were treated to an informative talk on aromatherapy. The oils look harmless enough but we were told only Tea Tree and Lavender oils can be used neat. The reflexology demonstration made me smile, the squirming of those among us that can't bear to have their feet touched and the longing of the rest of us to be in the model's place. An interesting fact for couch potatoes was reflexology is a passive exercise. If you are prone to epilepsy HYSOP, SAGE and ROSEMARY are to be avoided as a RUB, it could bring on a fit. Another warning is not to use more than two drops of oil as skin damage will result. We were told EUCALYPTUS gathered in the morning smells quite different from the evening harvest. The treatment is helpful to all kinds of ailments. I didn't go anywhere our speaker, SUE JEFFS, with a name like Crick!
One of our stalwart members, Marjorie Fry, had a nasty fall, which left her with a cracked pelvis. Knowing Marjorie it will take more than that to get her down but all our best wishes for a speedy recovery are with you Marjorie.
The meeting finished after a social time of Guess the Smell! This brought a mixture of ooohs! Aaahs! And giggles to accompany us on our way home.

SLIP END PLAYGROUP
By the time you read this, Playgroup will probably have started the Autumn term, with extended opening times. We are still open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays but will now be ' in action' from 9.30 am until 12.30 pm. The cost has risen slightly as well to £4 for the whole session or for children that still go home at 12.00 to £3.50. Last term we were busy to the end of term. We had a display in the Church flower Festival representing St Francis. The children did the display mostly by themselves although it has to be admitted that it was an adult who dressed the Duplo St Francis in a piece of J cloth.
We had stalls at the Mother and Toddler and School Fetes. This was in conjunction with the After School Club to raise funds for both organizations. We also had a Sponsored Fun Run but as it was bad weather we ran round the inside of the Village Hall instead of outside. Our thanks go to all who helped with these activities and to those who sponsored the children.
We ended the term with a visit to Woodside Wild Fowl Park when we were lucky enough to have a bright day with virtually no rain. Mums, carers and children all loved the opportunity to stroke and hold the baby rabbits, goats and ducks and yes, we did wash our hands carefully afterwards.
So to the new term - we hope the extended hours will give us more time to play and work with the children to prepare for the time they go to Nursery and parents will benefit from the extra time too. If you would like to visit us with a view to joining the group please contact by phoning Alison on 01582 450084 or Jill on 01582 728865.
