FRIENDSHIP CLUB
Judging by the hilarity and cheerful banter which greeted Gillian's idea of running a BEETLE Drive for a change of activity at the club meeting, it would appear to have been a success. The shouts of laughter would give the impression to a passer-by that we had all gone back to our childhood! Perhaps other idea will develop to get yet more pleasure to the members later. Some details of the proposed outings have yet to be finalised but the committee members will I am sure prevail.
Gerald Dyer (Chairman)

LAUGHTER
It was a woman's first time on a plane. She boarded the aircraft and found herself a window seat in a non-smoking area. After she had settled in, a man came over and insisted that she was in his seat. She ignored him but he continued to hover over her, so she told him to go away. "OK", said the man, "If that's the way you want it, you fly the plane."

The famous scientist was on his way to give a talk when his chauffeur had an idea. "Hey boss, since I've heard your lecture so many times, why don't I deliver it and give you the night off?" "Sounds great," said the scientist. When they got to the auditorium, the scientist put on the chauffeur's hat and settled into the back row. The chauffeur walked to the lectern and gave the lecture. Afterward he asked if there were any questions. "Yes," said one professor, launching into a highly technical question. The chauffeur was panic-stricken for a moment, but quickly recovered, "That's an easy one," he replied, "So easy, I'm going to let my chauffeur answer it."

MURIEL
Once again I will attempt to write something or other but as we have not held our monthly meeting to date I cannot remark on the hall this month only that
I hope that some one has taken up the offer for the hall June 4th for the
golden jubilee party for the village children. Well Easter has past and the clocks have been brought forward and still everything in the village looks the same.Plenty of cars parked all over the place even the old army wagons.(reminds me of wartime) I also notice that since the corner shop has had the posts put in to divert the cars there seems to be twice as many. so little good did that do, but I
also find it handy to park there when i go in for my ice-cream, so am not
really complaining just finding something to write about this month..
I notice the magazine has gone up but still good value as it is delivered to
each home, which is surely a gratifying deed. I also note that the cyclists are back in the car playing fields so its
quite obvious that the youngsters are not going down to Peter Edwards area
even on their bicycles so what does one do about it nothing Lets hope that the children respect the smallness of the playing space compared with down the road. Well this seems a mournful write up this month but if I can get away with
it I'll be writing more exiting news next time. FROM MURIEL

This is the verse promised from last month

FLOS LETTER
A sweet little baby brother
had come to love with Flo
she wanted him brought to the table
so he could eat and grow.

You must wait awhile-said grandma
in answer to her plea but a little thing
that has no teeth cant eat like you and me

Why hasn't he teeth dear grandma
asked Flo in great surprise
Oh my, isn't he funny no teeth but
nose and eyes

I guess the babies toothies must have been forgot cant we buy him some like grandpas, I would like to know why not.

That afternoon to her corne,r with paper pen and ink went Flo saying, now don't talk, you'll disturb my think

I'm writing a letter grandma to send to heaven tonight and because its very important I want to get it right.

At last the letter was finished
a wonderful letter to see directed up to heaven and then Flo read it to me.

Dear God the baby you brought us
was awfully nice and sweet
but because you forgot his toothies
the poor little thing cant eat.

That's why I'm writing this letter
on purpose to let you know
so please come and finish the baby
with love from little Flo

Note from Editor: P. N. has not gone up - it's been the same price for several years now!

SLIP END TENNIS CLUB
The Annual General Meting was held on Friday 5th April. Peter Smith was re-elected as Chairman and Steve Lyons was elected as the new Treasurer. The meeting voted to take on a loan of £1500 offered by the Bedfordshire Playing Fields Association so that both courts could be repainted. We hope that this can be done soon so that all our members can take advantage of an improved surface.
The Tennis Club enjoyed a very successful Quiz Night on Saturday April 13th which raised a profit of £250 to help towards the cost of repainting the courts. There were ten teams who had to answer questions ranging from Musicals to Works of Art to Football Shirts.
Chairman Peter Smith - is this the latest
fashion trend or one of the football shirts ?
There were two rounds based on "The Weakest Link" and "Millionaire" and a version of bingo based on the scores gained by each team. Any loss of grey cells was replenished with the supper of fish or chicken and chips. Many thanks to all those who supported our evening.

We shall be holding a Play Tennis Day soon but we can't fix a date until the courts have been repainted. However, this will give people a chance to come down to the courts, without charge, to join some fun activities and hopefully join our Tennis Club. If you would like any information then please phone Peter on 01582 733253 or Sally about coaching on 01582 413501. If you wish to join the Tennis Club the fees if you pay before mid-May are

A senior member £22

A junior member £12

Family membership £32

VILLAGE APPEAL
Surely there must be someone with some photographs of Slip End approximately fifty years ago. I have found one of the St Andrew's Choir, printed below - don't they look different? Hopefully some will turn up for the special edition next month to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. I have some photos of the party that were taken at the silver anniversary twenty five years ago at the Village Hall and wonder how many children are still in the village or nearby. I hope to be printing some next month. Please let me know if you have any we could use.

EDITORS CHOICE
(with poems of May from Patience Strong)

May Day

May Day conjures up the picture
of a merry scene.
Children dancing round the maypole
on the village green.
May Day was a day for play and
long awaited joys,
For dairy maids and shepherd lads
and laughing girls and boys…..
May Day takes us back to that
great age in history -
When poets sang with silver tongues
and Drake was on the sea.
For when we see our lovely land
bedecked in May's gay dress -
We think of Merrie England
and the days of good Queen Bess.

Young Again

Lovely are the lanes of England when the hedges are in flower.
Fragrant is the scent of May
that drifts from every cottage bower.
Charming are the little gardens
where the wayside orchard grow,
when the lupins line the borders
and the lilac tassels blow…
Everything is fresh and sparkling,
warmed by sun and washed with rain.
May has waved her magic wand
and all the world is young again
