WEDDING OF STEPHANIE CROSSETT TO CHRIS FLEET – 22ND MAY

Congratulations to Stephanie and Chris who were married at St Andrew’s Church on May 22nd . The Church was full of friends, relations, the Church family and well-wishers – many from the Frog & Rhubarb Public House. Stephanie and Chris both used to work there so it was nice to see so many ‘regulars’ come along to give their blessings to the young couple. Stephanie is well known at St Andrew’s and has been a frequent visitor. She plays in the orchestra with her flute and has also played her beautiful harp there.

Her dad Ken is the Church Warden and mum Lorraine used to sing with Themes. It was good to see so many of the Church family, past and present at St Andrew’s on the day.
We wish Stephanie and Chris both every happiness and good luck in their new home.

Love the hats – Teresa Willson & Val Church

Love at First Sight

Lovely at first sight is a strange mystery
For life starts anew at a glance.
Joy thrills the heart as it wakes
And breaks free – into a world of romance…
Once in a lifetime this drama takes place.
It seems that the stage has been set.
A stranger, a meeting, a voice and a face –
A moment we never forget.
This the most beautiful memory of all,
Recalling that old sweet delight.
Happy the heart that has known what it means:
The rapture of love at first sight.

MURIEL HAS HER SAY
What does one write about the village after not writing for several months in the magazine? There is little more I can say, as things do not seem to change.

We are still awaiting the camera at the village hall so in the meantime it looks as though we are still getting damage to various things around the hall centre. We have had an uplift to the hall inside, with outside spring cleaners coming in as it is a huge job for the caretaker to have such a lot to do, and I was thinking that a good idea would be to suggest that the young folks of the village could perhaps volunteer to sometimes sweep up the car park and the young ladies help inside the hall and it will perhaps give them all a sense of achievement that they have all contributed to keep the place looking good all of the time. After all it is the village that they reside in and I would certainly feel proud of myself if I had been able to offer my time whilst standing around being bored. So, if you lovely youngsters want to help please let me know so I can put forth your offers and who knows, by volunteering these small jobs you could end up with your own committee with ideas for the future.
Have any of you heard of the young farmers clubs in various counties? Well we could call you the younger members committee of slip end village hall with one of you in charge. What an honour you would have with your power over the rest. Still it’s simply an idea to perhaps keep you all happy especially when autumn comes around, so think about it. I always need to mention the young folks of the village because in my days many many years ago there were things that one could do all of the time. Red cross, girl guides (perhaps laughable to you girls) fire auxiliary for the lads and many other things to keep one occupied, so if you think that my suggestion to run your future village hall, or perhaps I should say manage it, let me know of your thoughts so I can put your feelings forward to our management committee. At this stage I suggest that you could have a discussion in my home with myself present if you all like the idea. All of what I have written is purely my idea so if any villagers feel that it is wrong let me know of your views because I will always say that these youngsters need something to do and maybe the answer to a lot of prayers to be able to assist the village with their own methods and ideas especially some older ones sometimes doing some things wrong a lot of the time (myself included) lets give them a go and get living in this funny old so called modern world. From Muriel

(What about some younger members joining the main Village Hall Committee – you could kill two birds with one stone then Muriel – get some younger people involved and then you will hopefully have some much needed help? Editor)

If anyone else would like to air a grievance or has something they would like to share with the village please write to the Parish News. We welcome news from the residents and any interesting facts or holidays. Come on now – don’t by shy!

Glad to see the flags are out at The Plough – mind you I cant say I’m looking forward to weeks of Euro 2004 Football but I hope the England team do well.

A Poser
The answer to the question, “How many P's are there in Paul's Pint?” is 272 (at the time of going to press!). The real question is, WHY?

EDITORS CHOICE
Show a little gratitude
Show a little gratitude when someone’s helping you
Go out of your way to say a little word
or two.
No reward is sweeter than a thank you
and a smile.
Compensates for trouble take; makes it
seem worthwhile…
Oftentimes we take for granted all
the kindliness –
Of people near and dear to us. By word
or caress –
We can show we know and notice
and appreciate.
There’s nothing half so sad as to
remember this – too late.

With holidays fast approaching I found this little verse to share with you.
It’s just the time to take your ease,
Or sunny miles to roam;
But don’t forget to give a thought
For those who stay at home.
Please drop a line to warm their hearts –
A line like this would do:
“We’re busy doing nothing, but
We’ve time to think of you!”
And a special mention to friends who have been fighting illness recently and anyone else.
What is life without a friend?
What is life without a friend to help you get along To strengthen you when troubles come and things are going wrong…When problems loom like mountains and the sudden storms descend – When everything looks hopeless – What is life without a friend?

SLIP END – WILLOWFIELD LOWER SCHOOLS FOOTBALL TEAM
2003/2004
Senior Cup Winners Division 2 Champions
In recent seasons fewer children have been coming forward to play, so last season our team amalgamated with Willowfield School, Caddington. So our squad has been together now for two seasons, integrating and improving really well over that time.
Throughout this season the lads have all played their parts and performed to their best abilities, especially in the Cup Competition, where the last three games were against Division 1 opposition. The semi final against Totterhoe was very close, the score even at full time and we won out on penalties. In the final, we came out on top against Lancot, winning 2 – 0.
Our league record was superb, we even beat Arsenal: well, in terms of our record at least, where we were not just undefeated but in fact won all 16 games!

I am sad to be stepping down now, after my six year stint with the lads, through winning and loosing times. I want to thank our Coach, Mark Oliver for his valuable support; also to Jon Barker and the parents for their support over the years. If there is anyone out there willing to carry on the work, we’d love to hear from you.

GRAHAM KENDRICK

I was lucky enough to go and see Graham Kendrick when he appeared at St Marys Church, Luton in May. He writes a lot of Christian songs – one of the more famous being ‘Shine Jesus Shine’ which he played at the end of the concert. It was good to see the large church of St Mary’s almost full and everyone singing together. Some of you may have seen him recently when he was on Songs of Praise. I don’t know where he gets his inspiration from but he seems to be able to keep writing thoughtful and meaningful words to a range of different tunes, some slow and some fast.
It was a good evening and I think everyone who was there enjoyed it.

LAUGHTER

The husband and wife had several problems whilst assembling their new computer so they called the help desk. The man on the phone started to talk to the husband Jeff in computer language which confused them even more. “Sir”, Jeff said politely, “please explain what I should do as if I were a four year old.” “OK,” the technician replied. “Son, could you please put your mummy on the phone?”

At a car boot sale, a keen gardener spotted a weeding lance, which is used to remove unwanted plants from the garden without having to bend down. Beside the item was a sign spelt out using letters from a child’s alphabet set. It read: “Weed staning up”.
The customer pointed out to the stall holder that “standing” had been misspelt. “I only had one ‘d’ she said without looking up from her paperback she was reading. “Where would you have put it?”

The young man noticed an elderly lady slowly pushing a shopping trolley back to the supermarket it had come from. Ever courteous, he insisted on pushing it for her. The woman struggled alongside, doing her best to keep up.
At the entrance he said, “Here you go love,” and gave the trolley back to her. Catching her breath, she said, “Thank you, but I was using it to lean on.”

Did you hear about the man who, in an attempt to get in touch with his feminine side, went to the library and took out a book called “How to hug”? He got home and found it was volume 7 of the encyclopaedia.
